Hello my scholars of the English language! It’s Emi Sensei from AIC Kids Umeda and Miyakojima. This year’s rainy season is later and longer than usual. Since we can’t go outside, let’s spend some time studying indoors.

  1. Joanne felt that the exam was very difficult, and so (    ) everyone else in the class.

① are

② were

③ do

④ did

Hint: The main verb in the first clause “felt” is in the simple past tense. The missing verb also should be in the simple past tense.

Also, “everyone else” is a collective noun, so treat it like a singular noun.

Correct Answer:

did

This verb is in the simple past tense. Also, this verb is conjugated correctly for a singular subject. Finally, the meaning of this verb (to do) matches the sentence best.

① are

This verb is in the simple present tense, so this cannot be the answer.

② were

Although this verb is in the simple past tense, this is not the correct answer. “Everyone else” show the subject of the second clause is plural. However, “everyone else” is a collective noun, so we treat it like a singular subject.

Not only that, but we cannot use the past tense of “be” in this sentence, because the second clause begins with the word “so” implies similarity between the actions of Joanne and he classmates. For the past tense of “be” to be the correct answer, the verb in the first clause should also be a past tense form of “be”.

For “were” to be the correct answer, we’d need to change the sentence so it looks like this:

Joanne was upset that the exam was very difficult, and so was everyone else in the class.

③ do

This verb is in the simple present tense, so this cannot be the answer.

  1. The  value of the dollar has (    ) to such a degree that Yasushi cannot afford to travel to the United States this year.

① raised

② spared

③ given

④ risen

Hint: We are looking for a verb that means the subject moved itself up.

Correct Answer:

risen

This is the past tense of “to rise”.

This word means to go up.

The subject is the one that is moving itself.

This is the correct answer.

① raised

This is the past tense of “to raise”.

This word means the subject was moved or lifted up.

Something else is causing the subject to go up.

Because the subject is not moving itself, this cannot be the answer.

② spared

This is the past tense of “to spare”.

It means to refrain from killing or hurting.

③ given

This is the past participle of “to give”.

  1. How foolish you must have thought (    )!

① was I

② I am

③ am I

④ I was

Hint:  Must have shows an opinion about an earlier situation.

The speaker is talking about something they think someone thought that occurred in the past.

We are looking for a verb in the past tense to complete what the speaker assumes the person thought about them during the past situation.

Correct Answer:

I was

This is in the simple past tense and the subject verb order is correct.

① was I

This is in the simple past tense, but the word order is incorrect.

② I am

The word order is correct, but this is in the simple present tense.

③ am I

The word order and the verb tense are both incorrect.

  1. Let’s have dinner when Father (    ).

① comes home

② will come home

③ will come to home

④ will have come home

Hint: The verb “let’s” is the contracted version of “let us”. “Let’s” is used in imperative sentences to invite others to do something. The verb “let’s” is followed by verbs in the simple present tense.

We know this imperative sentence is a suggestion to do something in the future already because the adjectival clause begins with “when”, so it is unnecessary for the missing verb to be in the future tense.

Correct Answer:

comes home

This is the best choice because the verb is in the simple present tense.

② will come home

This verb is in the simple future tense.

③ will come to home

This verb is in the simple future tense and we never use the preposition “to” with the noun “home”.

④ will have come home

This is the future perfect tense.

  1. What has Bob done that he (    ) deserve such severe punishment?

① may

② will

③ would

④ should

Hint: All the verbs are in the simple present tense. We are looking for a verb which means “it’s better to do something a certain way because it’s correct or proper”.

Correct Answer:

should

This verb is used to:

  • give advice and recommendations
  • talk about obligation
  • talk about probability and expectation
  • express a conditional situation

This is the correct answer.

① may

This verb means to have the ability or permission to do something.

② will

This verb shows the future tense.

③ would

This is the past tense of the verb “will”.

It is also used in conditional sentence to show the result of an imagined event or situation.
