Hello everyone!
Welcome back to Minami branch! How was your New Year’s? What did you do?
I think you will say you did 初詣 (first shrine visit), ate おせち料理 (New Year dishes), and got お年玉 (New Year’s cash presents).
Did you know Americans would say none of those?
First of all, to Americans, New Year’s = New Year’s Eve, not New Year’s Day. So, if you ask “What did you do?” to an American, they will say “I watched the countdown on TV.”
Did you stay awake until midnight? I did with my family, everyone under the “kotatsu” together. But we stand up at 11:59 to welcome the New Year together. My youngest “jumped” into the New Year.
Also, most Americans don’t even leave their house on New Year’s Day. They just relax and home with their family watching sports on TV and eating a big dinner together. And the holiday is only New Year’s Day. Many students have to go back to school, and Moms and Dads go back to work, on January 2nd!
For us, here in Minami, we are back on January 7th and 8th… Did you practice reading over the break? I’ll be checking!! This is your last chance to get some online reading practice in. I want many students to read for me when classes start again!
See you soon!
John
