It is Autumn, the leaves are changing color and it is getting colder day by day. Let’s go outside to see the beautiful Autumn colors. Do you know that there is a very special holiday in November in the USA….Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is one the biggest national holidays in the USA. It is not usually celebrated in Ireland or the UK. Thanksgiving is held on the 4th Thursday of November in the USA so this year it will be celebrated on the 28th of November. Thanksgiving is held to celebrate the new harvest and for families to come together to share a big meal together and to tell each other what they are thankful for this year. The first Thanksgiving is believed to have been held by English settlers in the USA in 1620.
A large parade called “The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” is held in New York every year. Colorful floats go down the famous streets of Manhattan and huge balloons of famous cartoon characters fly in the sky. About 50 million Americans watch the parade on television each year.
At a traditional dinner the following foods are served: roast turkey, turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, bread rolls, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Many Americans also enjoy watching American Football NFL games on Thanksgiving.
A recent tradition is that many shops and department stores hold a big sale the day after Thanksgiving, this sale event is called “Black Friday”. Many websites and online retailers hold a sales event on the following Monday called “Cyber Monday”.
