A: I haven’t finished ( ) my room yet, Mom.
B: That’s OK. You can do it after dinner.
① clean
② cleaned
③ cleaning
④ to be cleaned
【Hint】 When a verb is the object of another verb, it is in the continuous form.
【Correct Answer】
③ cleaning
A verb that is the object of another verb should be in the ing continuous form.
Example: I like cleaning.
① clean
The bare infinitive form is when a verb is in the to-infinitive form but without to.
It is used when a verb is the object of certain verbs only, such as hear, see, make, let.
The main verb in this sentence is have not finished, so this answer is incorrect.
Example: Let him clean the room.
② cleaned
This is the past tense form of the verb clean. Since the main verb of the clause have not finished is already in the past tense form, this cannot be the correct answer.
Example: I cleaned the room.
④ to be cleaned
This verb is in the infinitive passive form (to be + past participle). This form follows modal verbs such as may, could, should, etc. to show what is correct or possible.
If my room were the subject of the sentence, then this would be the answer. However, since I is the subject, this is not correct.
Example: My room needs to be cleaned.
